This provisional assessment methodology was prepared as part of the states’ project to explore the feasibility of a shared Clean Water Act (CWA) assessment approach for the Upper Mississippi River (UMR). The assessment feasibility study accompanies the development and implementation of a comprehensive UMR CWA monitoring strategy. The monitoring strategy is designed to generate data that can be used by the states to assess the relative water quality condition of the UMR in supporting its four primary designated uses: aquatic life protection, water-based recreation, as a source of a public water supply, and fish consumption.
